The State Election Commission, Haryana was constituted on
18th November, 1993 under the provisions of
Article 243K read with Article 243ZA
of the Constitution of India.
Role & Responsibilities
- Superintendence, direction, and control of the preparation of electoral rolls for, and the conduct of, all elections of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Municipal bodies.
- Headed by a State Election Commissioner Who is appointed by the Governor of the State.
Constitutional Powers
- Powers under Articles 243K and 243ZA are identical to those of the Election Commission of India under Article 324.
- Election Commission of India → Conducts elections to Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies.
- State Election Commission → Conducts elections to PRIs and Municipal bodies.
Functions
- Preparation of electoral rolls for local bodies (Municipal Committees, Councils, Corporations).
- Preparation of rolls for Panchayati Raj Institutions (Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samitis, Zila Parishads).
- Conduct and supervision of General, and Bye-elections of PRIs and Municipal Bodies.
