    The State Election Commission, Haryana was constituted on 18th November 1993 under the provisions of Article 243K read with Article 243ZA of the Constitution of India. The Commission has been given the responsibility of superintendence, direction, and control to conduct all elections to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Municipal bodies in the State. The Commission is headed by a State Election Commissioner appointed by the Governor. The powers and functions of the State Election Commission under Article 243K and 243ZA of the Constitution of India are identical to those vested in the Election Commission of India constituted under Article 324 of the Constitution of India. The Election Commission of India is vested with the responsibility of conducting elections to House of People and State Legislative Assemblies whereas the State Election Commission with the conduct of elections to all elections of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Municipal bodies in the State.

    State Election Commission also carries out activities related to preparation of electoral rolls for the local bodies (Municipal Committees/ Municipal Councils/ Municipal Corporations) and Panchayati Raj Institutions (Gram Panchayat/ Panchayat Samitis/ Zila Parishads) of the State and conducting General/ Mid-term/ Bye-elections and supervising them, which it has been empowered with Superintendence, Direction and Control of elections of local bodies.
